Michael Johns goes home

Next up is Bono plugging his site one.org,saying it's dedicated to changing the world. Then Hillary Clinton pops up urging people to donate, followed by John McCain and Barack Obama.

Back to the results. Ryan asks Randy if he's surprised by the bottom three - Randy says it is a surprising bottom three, but that it's about showing who you are at this point. Ryan then asks Paula if America got it right and Paula says she thinks America got it partly right. Then Ryan goes to Simon and asks him if he thinks America is listening to him and Simon says he thinks he's finally made a connection, that it took a while, but yes, people are listening now.

Ryan goes through the performances of the bottom three and what the judges said about them and tells Syesha and Carly that they are safe. It is Michael Johns who goes home and I, along with the studio audience am dumbstruck.

I figured he'd get cut sooner or later. I really like his singing, but I started feeling that he'd be best as a lead singer of a cover band .... Not doing his own thing.

anon: i see what you mean about lead singer but definitely deserve to go home this week since carly and syesha have had more off weeks than michael.

I called the bottom three -- I bet if Michael hadn't gone first, he'd be safe. I think going first is such a handicap. And if you don't blow people away, it can be forgettable.

Idol sucks, those two chicks deserved to go home before him. The show is fixed anyway!

my goodness is this a political indoctrination tv show? I just want to be entertained not be tera jerked by rich hollywood types

I am in complete shock. I thought for sure it would be Syesha or Carly. I really enjoy Michael John's singing thought he'd at least make the top 4. I think whoever said that he had a handicap from going first, got it right. It is such a disadvantage to go first on this show. I am really disappointed with the results.

I also think it was a jerky thing for Ryan Seacrest to announce Michael as the one going home, then to hold him there and say "You know last year at this time we didn't send anyone home.....pause......but this time we are saying goodbye to Michael Johns".

Wow. That sucked.

Michael Johns was so much better than most of the contestants and had the whole package! What is wrong with people?? I was totally shocked and disappointed. And - they could have given him a pass this week because they did it last year during American Idol Gives Back!!

I am just so glad Jason is still in the game. He is the best of all of them, IMO.

Michael was the best, as far as character, looks and talent!

This is sooo unfair and I agree that Ryan was a jerk! But I knew that anyway...

I can't wait for Michael's first album!!!

Idol sucks.

Jason should have been the one America got it wrong. He sucks and reminds me of Tiny Tim.

Seacreast should be sent packing for his comment: "You know last year at this time we didn't send anyone home.....pause......but this time we are saying goodbye to Michael Johns".

Yes it is only a game but we are human, well, everyone except Seacrest Out. Michael finds out he is going home, then, teary eyed, Seacreast makes that dumb comment, Michael raises his head and opens his eyes displaying a glimmer of hope only to have Seacreap pull the rug out from under him.

Hey Seacreature, you are a shallow, selfish, unfeeling toad. Go crawl under an Australian rock and molt to the beautiful sounds of Michael Johns.

I AM SO MAD I DON'T EVEN WANT TO WATCH THE SHOW ANY MORE - I WAS MAD THE YEAR THEY LET CHRIS DAUGHTRY GO ALSO - YOU SEE HOW GOOD HE IS NOW - THOSE GIRLS, CHRISTY, BROOKE ESPECIALLY SHOULD HAVE GONE FIRST. I THINK CARLIE & SAYESHA ARE PRETTY GOOD. I THINK THIS HAS BECOME A POPULARITY CONTEST INSTEAD OF A SINGING CONTEST. I GUESS ARCHULETTA IS MY NEXT CHOICE NOW!!!

I think this smacks of Daughtry. Stupid people. But think about it, he is in the middle agewise. Older folks think he's too rock and the teeny boppers think he's too old. He's caught right in the middle. Kick of that little Howdy Doody frosted smiling David Archie off. He has been singing Angels for years and says it was hard for him to learn. Michael Johns is better than Carly, Syesha, probaly Jason and Brooke as well. Kristie Lee is getting better but she will only get a country contract. Michael will also get a contract. Some of those others that are still there will not.

I am so sick about Michael John's leaving. He is one of the best and has an amazing voice. I think Carly should of definitely got the boot this week. Her performance was angry and she thinks she is Nancy Wilson from Heart and she isn't. She never picks good songs and Simon was right when he said she needs to improve her appearance. I guess now I am cheering for David Cook.

Jan Sheffield said something must be wrong with the phone counter because I got thru and voted and I tried again for almost 2 hrs & couldn't get thru. There needs to be a recount Simon. Michael Johns is one of the top 2 singers in the competition. BRING MICHAEL BACK!!!

Michael Johns deserved to go and the comparison to Chris Daughtry's cut is ridiculous. Johns was hyped up as a great contender but did not have a signature performance. you could go through almost every contestant in the top 10 or 11 and remember a distinct performance where they were great and that just wasn't the case with Michael Johns.
In all honesty, after his absolute butchering of the Beatles' song a few weeks ago he probably should have been sent home.

This week he had a horrible song choice, horrible positioning and made the bad choice of backtalking to the judges. And when it was all said and done, he had the package but he failed to deliver.

Anonymous,

No way should Michael have gone home!!!! It is so unfair the way Ryan announced it after saying last year we didn't send anyone home at this time. They should have kept him. I think Jason should go home he is boring.

Michael dont give up we want to hear you!!

Bring Michael BACK!!!

RECOUNT!!!

This is ridiculous. It should've been the 2 rocker dudes in the finale.

Ryan Seacrest is heartless!!!!!!!

I was very disappointed to see Michael leave especially when there are at least 4 others who should have gone. I also thought it was very rude of Ryan Seacrest to give him a glimmer of hope when he said that last year during Idol Gives Back, they didn't send anyone home. Not very nice Ryan.

Not enough people connected with Michael Johns. Not enough people felt he needed to be saved. He would not have won, anyway. He is not as unique as some of the other finalists. Jason Castro is memorable, beautiful, soulful and has never had and lost a record deal, unlike 5 of the remaining Idols. He got no AI exposure prior to the Top 24 week, unlike all of the remaining Idols. He looks different (that's for sure), and he sounds different. He took a chance at being compared to Tiny Tim (seriously? not even close)when he delivered that beautiful song on the ukelele. With all of the odds against him, he connected better with the public than a "sure thing" like Michael Johns. Maybe the public is not as easily "sold" as one might think.
